Our History

In 1973, Pat Goebel was seeking an opportunity in funeral service as he had been doing since his graduation in 1967 from Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science and while serving his subsequent apprenticeship at Schoedinger Funeral Service in Columbus. During the time of this search, Pat had been working as a telephone lineman in order to provide for wife and two small daughters. It was at that time that he learned of a funeral home for sale in Crooksville. This funeral home was known as Fred L. Cannon and Sons, started by the Cannon family in 1897 and was originally called Cannon & Cannon Funeral Home until a division of the business occurred sometime in the mid 1950's. The original location of the business was in the middle of town at 116-118 East Main St. but the current location is 36 North Buckeye St. where it has been located since sometime in the 1920's.

Pat began working at the funeral home and began negotiations in 1973 with the group of men that owned the business. These men had formed Crooksville Holding Company, Inc. in order to keep the funeral home in operation as it had fallen on hard times. The Holding Company consisted of Rev. William Alvey, Jimmy Smith, Dan Hoops, and Pie Burns.

When all was finalized, Pat P. Goebel purchased his funeral home on July 13, 1974 and amended the corporate name to GOEBEL FUNERAL HOME, INC.

That was the beginning of millions of hours of work, sweat and tears to turn a depressed funeral home into the thriving and top-notch funeral service establishment that it is today.

Now known as GOEBEL FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES, INC., Pat & his wife, Dorothy (Harbaugh) Goebel and their staff, Kevin (Doug) Lundell serve the families of Crooksville, Roseville and the surrounding areas with dignity, integrity, professionalism, warmth and compassion. The Goebels work diligently to provide the highest quality of all aspects of funeral service: facilities, products, preparation, personalization, aftercare, community involvement. Furthermore, they attend seminars in order to educate themselves in the latest technology and trends available in their field. In fact, they were the first funeral home in Perry County to have a website and Online Register Book and personalized service folders with a picture of the deceased on the front.

Their philosophy is one of complete adaptation to the wishes and needs of each family that requests their assistance in handling the final arrangements of their loved one.

Goebel Funeral Home and its staff are members of the National Funeral Directors Assn., Ohio Funeral Directors Assn., and Ohio Embalmers Assn. Their individual memberships include

Peerless Lodge 591 F. & A.M., VFW Post 9090, Crooksville Eagles #1979, Hull Pottery Assn., Crooksville Athletic Assn., just to name a few. Pat has served on the Perry County Metropolitan Housing Board for 40 years and he is chairman of that board. His has been the longest term ever served and it is completely voluntary, without pay.

Pat and Dorothy are active members of Church of the Atonement Catholic Church in Crooksville and they live at the funeral home. Doug is a very active member of First Hope United Methodist Church in Crooksville and lives just two blocks from the funeral home. In their words, we live here, we work here, we worship here, we buy here, we ARE your family owned, hometown, funeral home.

Pat and Dorothy have seventy-eight years combined experience in funeral service. In addition, they have been willing to share their expertise, serving as speakers in school classrooms, club and group meetings and are always eager to help educate the public about funeral service. The consistency and continuity of excellence in service come from Pat's being the sole owner and operator of this business for the past 41 years and for many more years to come. The slogan they have used in advertising for many years best describes the honesty and dedication they live by in their conducting business. That slogan is "Built on Integrity, Worthy of your Trust." These are not just words to the Goebels; these are intentions in every facet of their business.
