Steven E. German

May 29, 1950 — September 21, 2017

Steven E. German, 67, of Corning, Ohio, passed away peacefully and with dignity surrounded by his family at 1:50 PM, on Thursday, September 21, 2017, at Genesis Hospice Morrison House in Zanesville following a life well lived and a battle with pancreatic cancer.

Steve was born on May 29, 1950 in Zanesville and was the son of the late Wallace and Rosalie (Ogg) German. Steve was a lifelong resident of Southeastern Ohio, he attended Crooksville High School and was a graduate of the class of 1968. He went on to pursue a lifelong career in education and attended Ohio University and Xavier University where he received his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees, respectively.

Steve is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 36 years, Teresa Schmelzer-German; his son and daughter-in-law, Brandon and Ashley German of Corning; his daughter and son-in-law Julie German-Murrey and Doug Murrey of Spokane, Washington; his beloved granddaughters, Sydney and Camryn German of Corning; numerous cherished friends; his best pal, Morgan, a Border Collie; and his brothers, Ray German and Ron German.

One of Steve’s passions was helping students and teachers find success. He was fulfilled by building lifelong relationships, which he believed was a key component to a successful education. He started his teaching career at Crooksville High School where he taught industrial arts from 1975-1977. He then moved to Maysville Local Schools where he served passionately as an industrial arts teacher, basketball coach, middle school principal, and high school principal from 1977 until his retirement in 2005. After his retirement, he enjoyed working part-time as a tour guide for Main Street Tours where he led school trips to Gettysburg, Washington DC, and New York City, and he could be found spectating many Maysville athletic events.

Steve was happiest when he was spending time with family and friends on his deck, restoring classic cars, playing golf and testing Teresa’s cooking. He also took great joy in teaching his granddaughter Sydney how to golf and play basketball, finding ways to make his granddaughter Camryn smile and laugh, and taking his annual winter trip to Florida with Teresa and Morgan.

Steve was loved by many and will be greatly missed. Please join us for a Celebration of a Life Well Lived at the Maysville High School Cafeteria at 3725 PANTHER DR., ZANESVILLE, OH 43701 on Sunday, October 1 from 2-5 pm. A service, officiated by Pastor Brian Law, will begin at 5pm. In keeping with his wishes Steve was cremated.
