William E. "Bill" Mercer, 83, of Corning, Ohio died peacefully at 6:43 AM, Sunday, February 9, 2014 at his home surrounded by his family.
He was born September 15, 1930 in New Lexington, the son of Wilford & Letha (Geddes) Mercer. He married Shirley (Sprouse) Mercer on July 17, 1954 and was a member of the Maple Avenue Christian Church in Crooksville.
Bill served our country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He and his wife were owners and operators of the Ben Franklin Store in Crooksville. Bill was a member of the VFW Post# 9090 Crooksville-Roseville and the Crooksville American Legion Post# 222.
In addition to his wife of over 59 years,Shirley, Bill is survived by three daughters, Trina (Scott) Carr and Dawn (Craig) Schooley both of Corning and Angie (Rich) McCormick of Sunbury; eight grandchildren, Chris (Nichole) Carr and Shawn (Sommer) Carr all Corning, Jamey Carr of Crooksville, Kyle (Nakeya) Schooley of Saltillo,Mitch & Mollie Schooley of Canal Winchester, Andres Mercer and William Mercer both of Pickerington and Meghan McCormick of Sunbury; seven great grandchildren, Hunter, Tyler & Brayden Carr, Charlie Carr, Chance & Trace Schooley and Caiden Schooley and one sister, Esther Ann Snide of Coshocton.
In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his son, Kelly Joe Mercer of Pickerington who passed away December 6, 2013.
Family and friends will be received Wednesday, February 12, 2:00 to 6:00 PM at GOEBEL FUNERAL HOME, 36 North Buckeye Street, Crooksville. Funeral services and celebration of Bill's life will be held at 6:00 PM with Pastor Marc Caton officiating. Full military honors will be presented. In keeping with Bill's wishes, cremation will follow.
